Gauntlet Racer: Endless Driving Survival Game
Gauntlet Racer is an endless driving survival game where speed, precision, and split-second decisions matter. Dodge obstacles, collect power-ups, and survive a shifting road that narrows and accelerates as you progress across six distinct environments, from open plains to icy mountain passes. Choose Easy, Normal, or Hard, or dial in your own custom challenge. How far can you survive?
Features
- Procedurally generated roads across six distinct biomes (plains, desert, snow, forest, rocky mountain, and bridge) so every run feels different.
- Difficulty ramps up as you play, with faster speeds, narrower roads, and less room for error.
- Collect power-ups that can extend a run, increase speed, or temporarily change how you navigate obstacles.
- Fully customizable difficulty, obstacles, and power-ups. Adjust road width, speed, spawn frequency, and more.
- Jumping and braking give you control over obstacles, speed, and tight road segments.
- Distance-based scoring rewards survival and lets you compete against your best runs.
How to Play
Controls
- A / Left Arrow steers left.
- D / Right Arrow steers right.
- S / Down Arrow applies the brake.
- W / Up Arrow / Space makes the car jump.
Power-Ups
- Extra Life adds one life to your count.
- Ghost Mode makes the car semi-transparent and invulnerable to obstacles for a few seconds.
- Speed Boost temporarily increases your speed.
- Slow Down temporarily reduces your speed.
Tips
- Jump over clusters of cones rather than weaving through them.
- Brake before tight curves since the road narrows fastest at high speed.
- Your score pauses when fully stopped, so braking to line up a gap won’t cost you distance.

How It Was Built
Gauntlet Racer started as an older QBasic project and was substantially modernized using AI assistance. I wrote about the process in Using AI to Modernize a 30-Year-Old QBasic Game for the Web.
